Been on the road already in 2010

It was a nice break, but we’re back at it!

California has been good to us this last month, and we’ve been happy to be spending time at home in the Owens Valley.

SoCal was lovely to us as we spent time at The Autry National Center of the American West in lovely Griffith Park http://www.autrynationalcenter.org/ and loving everything at Rituals http://www.ritualsdecor.com/index.html where Marty Frenkel has made a career of spotting those treasures that speak to us, too!

Bakerfield neon (Small)

We rounded our loop with a night of honky-tonkin’ goodness in Bakersfield – home of such greats as the legendary Buck Owens, his protoge Dwight Yoakam, and Merle Haggard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakersfield_sound

Buck Owens own Crystal Palace http://www.buckowens.com/index2.html is a wonderful testament to the grandeur to the good ol’ days of the classic Bakersfield sound! There, I got to see the Buck Owens suits he was so famous for and the model for my own Rickrageous suit http://www.rickrageous.com/home_page.htm!

The music was great, and the collection FABULOUS, including this Nudie Cohn http://www.nudiesrodeotailor.com/ designed 1974 Pontiac convertible “Nudiemobile”, adorned with pistols and silver dollars and wonderful whip-stitch embroidered interior, statement car-turned barback!

Western Design Conference 2009 – Jackson Hole, WY

This year’s Western Design Conference was better than any other we’ve participated in… this year our chair, Painted Ponies, won “Best of Show” and in broad strokes our time there was washed in positive light and good vibes!!

Thanks to Foster & Lynn Friess for their continued support of the WDC, and sponsorship of the "Best of Show" award.

We were happy to see old friends, make new ones and have repeat clients going home with another bag.

Valerie Miller www.steelcow.com has been sporting her bag and matching belt all year and we’ve been enjoying our cow painting… she got another bag and matching wallet this year and we’re looking forward to another Steel Cow masterpiece coming our way, soon!

We fell head over heels for Nancy Anderson of Sweetbird Studio. But, even before we met, I loved her work. Sweetbird Studio www.sweetbirdstudio.com  is Nancy’s brainchild, it is kooky and whimsical and clever and genius!

A lovely tribute to our friend, Sonny Tuttle, kicked off the WDC fashion show as Red Nations Art took the stage and danced up a storm in true Sonny fashion, for the last time…

We strutted the catwalk in the WDC fashion show to Keith Urban’s Jeans On, sporting denim and our handbags!

Winning “Best of Show” is quite an honor, especially when up against fantastic artists like Molesworth reincarnate, Marc Taggart http://www.marctaggart.com/

It was after meeting Thea Marx http://www.contemporarywesterndesign.com, that our trip took us to Cody, WY. Thea loved our chair, and loved Sonny Tuttle… she asked us to bring Painted Ponies to her show, Style West in Cody, and we were happy to oblige.

“Toksha”, Sonny Tuttle 1932 – 2009

Here is our friend, Sonny Tuttle of Red Nations Art, in one of his “Spirit Hides”.

Our 2009 Western Design Conference Best of Show chair, “Painted Ponies”, incorporated one of Sonny’s art shawls into the design after Sonny was killed in a car crash in July. What began as a collaboration, became a tribute.

Go Green, Buy Vintage

My mom and I have been each other’s companions in travel and work for the last 10 years, not to mention my first 18. In that time we have always had a project in the works, be it the remodel and redecoration of a property or retail business, she is the machinery making the gears in our lives shift, change and go!

Our endeavor in American antiques spans more than my lifetime, as my mom’s passion for antiques predates me. I am familiar with stories of little Harriette dragging home bits and pieces of antiquity since girlhood. Re-use and re-purposing have always been a part of our lives… like those multitudes of rusticated treasure we’ve been bringing into our lives all these years.

Antique seeking is good, wholesome fun my mom and I both share. Our cross-country expeditions have been true adventures, times we reflect on again and again. Quality time together finding quality goods from the past.

Bargains have never been part of our story, but vintage merchandise that has already survived through lifetime’s and here to provide service and joy today, are worth their weight in gold. Utilizing the products of yesterday is good for the planet today and that alone is: priceless!

As we look around at the outsourcing of American goods and the deforestation associated with that manufacturing, we are proud of our choice to go vintage, stay American and be “Green”.
