Pony for Christmas? Vintage Mail Order Service: Ponies
Do kids ask for ponies for Christmas anymore?
When I was a kid, a pony was requested of Santa from the time I could write!
Being a spoiled child, I received a full grown horse instead.
In the mid-1950s several mail order catalogs listed ponies, among other animals, for sale in their publications.
Montgomery Ward had two pages of animal listings, including ponies, dogs and donkeys for sale.
The catalogs of Spiegel’s and Sears Roebuck also sold donkeys and “trained ponies with a saddle” for $299; Spiegel, sold even more exotic creatures including zebras.
Ponies were 2-7 years old and shipped within 24 hours. One Indiana breeder sold Sears over 2,000 ponies in one year.
Ponies were slated to have a life expectancy of 25-30 years, quite a commitment!
