Studded document box is antique with brass tack nail head detailing the initials "E.A.D." set into scalloped leather strips for a custom look. Leather strips tacked with studs run up both sides of the front and back, the front face has an iron escutcheon (though the lock does not function and there is no key) and each side is set with an iron bail pull and back plate. This antique studded document box is covered in hair-on rawhide and much of the hair has worn away with age. Inside is lined with news print from Salem, Massachusetts dated 1834! The back side shows areas where the rawhide has pulled away from the wooden box below and at one point the pieces in one area has been secured with small nails, does not detract from look.

Size measures: 20-3/4"L x 10-1/2"W x 9"H

**Another charming aspect of this wonderful piece is the undated, handwritten note that came with the box, it reads:

Dear Suey,

Grandma has asked me to tell you that this little box was hers when she lived in California 70+ years ago. So now it has gone from California to New England to Mississippi to Virginia to New York City to Washington D.C. to NYC again and then to Evanston, Illinois and back to Washington.... All with Grandma! We wonder where you will be going and what you will be doing as you continue to grow; you've already been to Europe - what next? Asia? Antarctica? The planets? Grandma had no idea when she was your age of the places she would see, the people she would meet. Well, we wish you well on your birthday and all other days.

Love,

Helen

(Now the box lives in Reno... where will it live next?)
