Historically chaps were introduced by the Spanish Vaqueros as a means of protecting their legs from brush, cactus, thorns, etc. “Chaps” is short for the Spanish chaparejos, meaning leather pants. Our cowboys not only used chaps for protection from sharp foliage, but the further north they were, chaps offered another layer of protection against big winters.
